Cancer Vaccines

Dr. Sebastiano Gattoni-Celli, M.D., is a Professor of Radiation Oncology and Microbiology & Immunology. He has two main research foci: cancer vaccines and prostate cancer proteomics.

We engineered a human cell line (FO-1 #12) capable of fusing with any patient-derived human cells (e.g., white blood cells obtained through routine blood drawing) for the purpose of generating patient-tailored cancer vaccines (US Patent # 6,063,375). Most of this experimental work was performed when our knowledge and understanding of the anti-cancer immune response was, by current standards, very limited; therefore, it was not possible to identify with any precision the cellular and biochemical determinants of a successful immune response against cancer. We now plan to carry out preclinical studies, utilizing well-defined animal models in conjunction with state-of-the-art microarray technology, to dissect the cellular and biochemical basis of the anti-tumor immune response induced by semi-allogeneic cancer vaccines. We will obtain a specific gene profile identifying an effective immune response in mice. This profile will then be validated in patients enrolled in clinical studies, by measuring their immune profile using peripheral white blood cells.
