Residency Program
Facilities

The departmental facilities occupy over 18,000 square feet with three dual energy linear accelerators (all with electron capability, one with IMRT capability, one with IMRS/ stereotactic capabilities), a conventional simulator, a modified CT simulator, a high dose rate brachytherapy unit and 3-D treatment planning computers. During Academic year 2004-2005, the Department will move to a completely new facility in the Hollings Cancer Center. Clinics will meet in the Cancer Center in multi-disciplinary settings. The Department of Radiation Oncology will have two linear accelerators with dual energies ranging from 6-18MV with multi-leaf collimation for 3-D conformal beam and IMRT. The Center will also have a 16-slice CT/Simulator, one of the most advanced available. One linear accelerator will remain in the main hospital for specialty procedures, such as stereotactic radiosurgery, total body irradiation, and pediatric patients requiring general anesthesia.

The Department of Radiation Oncology has also opened a new satellite center in Georgetown, SC, an historic coastal town approximately 50 miles from Charleston. The facility is a combined radiation and medical oncology center, which accepts patients for clinical trials.

A new has opened in Mt. Pleasant, SC, which is fully equipped with a dual energy linear accelerator with a multi-leaf collimation. A 6-slice CT/Simulator will be part of the facility with treatment planning computers.

Residents will gain experience in all three centers. At the Hollings Cancer Center, there will be an emphasis on didactic programs, multi-disciplinary clinics and tumor boards, and participation in clinical trials. At the satellite centers, there will be exposure to sophisticated private practice with access to one-on-one training, clinical trials, and tumor boards.

Residents are provided with office space and shared usage of personal computers with Internet, medline and E-mail capabilities.
