About the Charleston Area

The Medical University is located within the historic district of the City of Charleston. Founded in 1669, Charleston is one of America’s oldest cities containing the largest historic district of any city in the country, and it offers the amenities of much larger cities. There is a wide assortment of educational and recreational facilities within the area. The city hosts one of the oldest regional symphonies in the country and is home of the Spoleto Festival, the most comprehensive arts festival in the country. As a tourist mecca, it also sports some of the best shopping and restaurants in the region with an active nightlife including jazz, theater, dance, and other performing arts.

Located along the coast, Charleston provides a mild year round climate with never a dull moment. Beaches are only a ten minute drive from the hospital; and, in fact, can be seen from the hospital when looking out across Charleston harbor. The area also has some of the best golf courses in the country. The North Charleston Coliseum hosts a vast array of contemporary concerts and sporting events.
